rail brake (plural rail brakes)

  1. (rail transport) A type of brake, often magnetic or electromagnetic, which is pressed against the rail in railway track.
    • 1962 April, “Beyond the Channel: Western Germany: The Henschel 4,000 h.p. V320 diesel”, in Modern Railways, page 274:
      The locomotive is fitted with disc air brakes, and in addition magnetic rail brakes are fitted to each bogie for emergency.
