Albanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Methatesized form of earlier *argal linked to Ancient Macedonian ἄργελλα (árgella, dwelling-place, where [men] bathe while warming up) and Ancient Greek ἄργιλλα (árgilla, subterranean house) (Magna Graecia). All forms likely derive from a substrate word (see ἄργιλλος, white clay). Orel, however, presumes it a borrowing from Slavic *rogalь.[1]
