quliŋŋuġutaiḷaq

  1. nine (lit. ‘one short of ten’)

Usage notes

[edit]

As the suffix -utaiḷaq only occurs at the end of a number, the numeral quliŋŋuġutaiḷaq 'nine' does not combine multiplicatively to form higher numbers. For example, 40,000 is tallimaqpak (𝋅𝋀𝋀𝋀, 5×8000), but 72,000 is tallimaqpak sisamaqpak (𝋉𝋀𝋀𝋀, 5×8000 + 4×8000), not *9×8000. It is however used additively, as in piŋasukipiaq quliŋŋuġutaiḷaq (𝋃𝋉) '69', which is etymologically 60 + 10 − 1.
