From (Western) Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *patiukan (kind of honeybee). Compare Pangasinan potiokan, Kapampangan pukiutan / putiukan, Asi pudyukan, Romblomanon putyūkan, Bikol Central putyokan, Cebuano putyukan, Western Bukidnon Manobo petiyukan, Tausug pussukan, Sangil patiukang, Sangir katiupang, Mongondow pasukan, and Central Dusun potiukan.
