Etymology

[edit]

From earlier półk, połk, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *pъlkъ. The phonetic change of > ół > suggests a borrowing from Old Ruthenian полкъ (polk),[1] although the evolution > > or > or after a labial consonant is probably also possible in Polish.[2] Displaced native Old Polish *pełk, found in Polish given names and toponyms.[1]
