Etymology

Coined by French naturalist, zoologist and paleontologist Georges Cuvier in 1809 in the misspelt form petro-dactyle from the Ancient Greek πτερόν (pterón, wing) + δάκτυλος (dáktulos, finger). Also ptéro- +‎ -dactyle.
