Inherited from Middle French prognostic, borrowed from Medieval Latin prognōsticus, from Ancient Greek προγνωστικός (prognōstikós, foreknowing), from πρό- (pró-, before) + γνωστικός (gnōstikós, relating to knowledge), from γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō, to be aware of, perceive, observe, know, learn).
