Etymology

Probably from Late Latin praebenda (“a payment”), from Latin praebendus (“which is to be proferred”). Compare Italian provenda, profenda, Old French provende. Cf. also the neological doublet prebendă.

1. (archaic, regional) payment (usually consisting of grains, cereals, and other produce) for an agricultural worker or ploughboy
2. (archaic, regional) part of the offering or alms given to the church singers
