From Javanese pramuka (ꦥꦿꦩꦸꦏ, leader), from Old Javanese pramukha (chief; take a stand against), from Sanskrit प्रमुख (pramukha, chief, respectable man, sage). Reconstructed as pra- +‎ muka.
