[edit]From Javanese pramuka (ꦥꦿꦩꦸꦏ, “leader”), from Old Javanese pramukha (“chief; take a stand against”), from Sanskrit प्रमुख (pramukha, “chief, respectable man, sage”). Reconstructed as pra- + muka.
