Affixed potong (cut) +‎ -an, inherited from Malay potongan. Replaced Dutch aftrek (deduction) by Komisi Bahasa Indonesia as published on Kanpō/Berita Pemerintah No.38 Year III Month 3 (2604) in 1944.
