Etymology

[edit]

The term is believed to derive from a French wine, Pontet-Canet, which was popular among the Finnish bourgeoisie in the 1800s. When the common people distilled their own drink, they gave it a name that sounds roughly the same. Alternatively possibly from Pontac, with +‎ -kka.
