From Latin *podiāre, from Latin podium. Compare Catalan and Occitan pujar, Portuguese pojar, Friulian poiâ, Venetan pojar. Cf. also French appuyer, Spanish apoyar, Portuguese apoiar, Italian appoggiare, from a related Vulgar Latin *appodiāre, present active infinitive of *appodiō.
