[edit]Etymology
[edit]From an unattested root *pjé + -të, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂-, with the meaning going from "in flight" > "in the air" > "above, upwards". First attested in 1555 by Buzuku: "se u ëngriti duoi em e it pjetë përmal, e duojtë taj e kishnë ëngjëruom e prunjishnë për të ënfalë timit."[1]
Orel claims it to be an unattested noun, meaning "widening, sky",[2] though this is purely speculative as aside from two mentions by Buzuku, the word is found nowhere else, except in its derived terms. Proto-Albanian *pʲéta- is not possible as it would've led to Albanian **pjet. Due to the a-umlaut, Proto-Albanian *pʲétad and *pʲétā- would have led to **pjatë, also unfeasible.[3]
The noun in Arvanitika is unrelated.
