[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with Burmese ဘီး (bhi:, “comb”), ဖြီး (hpri:, “to comb, to brush (hair)”), (possibly) Chinese 篦 (OC *piː, *bis), Nusu pɹe̱⁵⁵ (“comb”), Lisu ꓑꓶꓸ (pɯ́, “comb; to comb”), Hani peiq toq (“comb”), Naxi berl (“to comb”), berl mei (“comb”), Namuyi ʁuo⁵⁵ pəəʴ³¹ (“comb”) and (possibly) Central Bai sul pind (“comb”). Compare Lhao Vo pye꞉, Zaiwa byve, Lashi pyi”, Luxi Achang pjɛ⁵⁵ and Hpon phyè (“to comb”), phyè xò (“comb”).
