Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Sicilian pitturi, from Latin pictor.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Noun

[edit]

pittur m (plural pitturi, feminine pittur or pittura)

  1. painter (artist)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Similar to certain other words in -ur, the feminine form is slightly awkward because it also means “painting”. The basic form may be used instead, either with feminine or masculine agreement. So for “She is a well known painter” one could say Hija pittura magħrufa / pittur magħrufa / pittur magħruf. In the plural pittur and pittura merge in any case, however.
