phonemic merger (plural phonemic mergers)

1. (phonology) The phenomenon in which two different phonemes merge and become replaced by a single phoneme.
   • 2012, Gerhard Augst, New Trends in Graphemics and Orthography, page 171:

     The first sign of a phonemic merger is that two signs, which hitherto have been kept carefully apart, become used wrongly, e.g. das is written for MHG dar, and aller for MHG alles (Schulze 1967: 38f.).
