Etymology

Unknown. Possibly linked to Ancient Greek πιττάκιον (pittákion) (cf. Latin pittacium (label; patch)), or from a Vulgar Latin root *piticus. Compare Aromanian peaticã (rag, scrap, patch), peatic/peaticu, Calabrian pettica ("leather band, strip"); cf. also Spanish pedazo (piece).
