Compound of pengadilan (court) +‎ tinggi (high), calque from Japanese 高等法院(こうとうほういん) (kōtōhōin, literally higher + court), term used in East Asia. Continuation of Dutch raad van justisie, Japanese 高等法院(こうとうほういん) (kōtōhōin, appellate court, literally higher + court), and Dutch appelraad (appellate court).
