From Proto-Semai *pəlooᵍŋ (“roof”), from Proto-Aslian *pəluaŋ (thatch, roof), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(p)laŋ ~ *(p)laiŋ (thatching-grass). Cognate with Semnam plɔːŋ, Khmer ភ្លាំង (phlĕəng), Palaung pləŋ, Kuy plaŋ, Khmu plàːŋ, Khasi phlang, Vietnamese tranh.
