Etymology

[edit]

From Swedish pelargon. The dialectal variants like pela(r)kuu(ni) show a more direct borrowing, while the standard form pelargoni has been brought closer to the Latinate Pelargonium.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈpelɑrɡo(ː)ni/, [ˈpe̞lɑ̝rˌɡo̞(ː)ni]
  • Rhymes: -oni
  • Hyphenation(key): pe‧lar‧go‧ni

Noun

[edit]

pelargoni

  1. pelargonium, storksbill; geranium (any plant in the genus Pelargonium)

Usage notes

Pelargoniums are often commonly known in English as geraniums, because the two genera were earlier regarded as being one, called Geranium.
