[edit]From Middle Dutch patrise, from older partrise, from Old French pertriz, variant of perdriz, from Latin perdīx (“partridge”), from Ancient Greek πέρδιξ (pérdix, “partridge”). Forms retaining the first r existed into the 17th century.
