[edit]Inherited from Middle French pastoureau, from older pastourel, from Old French pastorel, from pastor + -el (diminutive suffix). Equivalent to modern pasteur + -eau. The ou is due to the pretonic position (cf. douloureux vs. douleur, prouver vs. preuve).
