passthrough (countable and uncountable, plural passthroughs)

  1. The act or process of passing through.
    1. (electronics, networking) As of a signal through a device or network.
    2. (business, economics) As of increased costs through a business entity to its customers through increased prices.
      • 1976 August 21, A. Nolder Gay, “Another View”, in Gay Community News, volume 4, number 8, page 4:
        Boston's projected $50 to $70 per thousand jump in the property tax rate, which will hit gays, poor and blacks alike with about an 8% pass-through rent increase this year.
      The airlines called the fuel surcharge a passthrough, but did not rescind it until well after fuel prices had returned to previous levels.
  2. A wall opening intended to allow something to be passed through it.
  3. (taxation) A legal entity intended to not incur (income) taxation at the entity, but solely at the beneficiaries.
    Partnerships, limited-liability companies, and Subchapter S corporations are the main US passthroughs.
