1. An ordered list of political candidates registered by a political party that determines which candidates are elected based on how many votes the party gets in an election.
   • 2009, Allen Hicken, Building Party Systems in Developing Democracies, page 148:

     Each party was required to submit a list of candidates for voters to consider, and voters cast two votes: one vote for a district representative and one for a party list.

     Candidates that are important in the party hierarchy can be guaranteed relatively safe seats by being placed toward the top of the party list, whereas candidates who fail to toe the party line can be placed toward the bottom of the party list.
