[edit]Possibly from pa- + *dita + -an. The root may be a lost stem according to Potet (2017). See also Malay pelita (“lamp”), which ultimately came from Classical Persian پلیته (palīta, “candle wick”). Compare Maranao palita'an (“lantern; lamp”), Maguindanao palitan (“lamp”), and Tausug palitaan (“lamp”).
