Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *poneděľa, possibly via Old East Slavic понедѣ́локъ (ponedě́lokŭ). Displaced by pirmadienis, which see for more. By surface analysis, pa- +‎ nedėlia. Compare Samogitian panedielis, pandielis.
