palpakko
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot for Flora Fennica (1860). palpa + -kko, where the initial part is re-extracted from palpaheinä (“cattail”) (attested in Suomalaisia kasvu-nimejä (1850) by Henrik August Reinholm; + heinä (“grass, hay”)).[1] The root could be akin to Karelian palʹpakko (“dwarf, stunted person”), palʹpukkaine (“small ball, flower bud”), possibly of sound-symbolic origin (compare pulpukka).
