Etymology

[edit]

Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot for Flora Fennica (1860). palpa +‎ -kko, where the initial part is re-extracted from palpaheinä (cattail) (attested in Suomalaisia kasvu-nimejä (1850) by Henrik August Reinholm; + heinä (grass, hay)).[1] The root could be akin to Karelian palʹpakko (dwarf, stunted person), palʹpukkaine (small ball, flower bud), possibly of sound-symbolic origin (compare pulpukka).
