English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Coined by the surfer Wallace Froiseth, possibly misheard or misspelled from Hawaiian pae + poʻo.
Noun
[edit]paipo
- Any prone-ridden surf-craft that is neither an inflatable mat nor a traditional finless soft bodyboard.
Usage notes
[edit]- The original paipos were finless wooden boards developed in Hawaii. By the 1960s the world of paipo had grown to include small foam/fiberglass bellyboards with surfboard fins. Both types still exist today, though in very small numbers.
