Inherited from Chagatai آزاد (āzād), from Classical Persian آزاد (āzād), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾcʾt' /⁠āzād⁠/, noble; free), from Old Persian *𐎠𐏀𐎠𐎫 (*a-z-a-t /⁠āzāta-⁠/), a northwestern borrowing from Proto-Iranian *āzāta-. Cognate with Uyghur ئازاد / azad / азад.
