[edit]From Middle English *overdrinken (attested only as a noun overdrink (“excessive drinking”)), from Old English oferdrincan (“to overdrink”), equivalent to over- + drink. Compare German übertrinken (“to overdrink”), Swedish överdrycka (“to overdrink”), Old English oferdrynċ (“excessive drinking, drunkenness”).
