- (organic chemistry) Any of a group of antibiotics that have orthoester linkages with a carbohydrate.
- 1979, Derek E.Wright, The orthosomycins, a new family of antibiotics[1]:
- A new family of antibiotics, the orthosomycins, which contain in their structures one or more orthoester linkages associated with carbohydrate residues, is described. Examples of orthosomycin antibiotics include flambamycin, the everninomicins -B, -C, -D and -2, hygromycin B, the destomycins -A, -B and -C, the antibiotics SS-56-C, A-396-I and, more recently, the avilamycins -A and -C.
