opportunity class (plural opportunity classes)

1. (Australia, education) A separate primary-school class for teaching gifted children.
2. (historical, education) A separate class for teaching backward children.

     Opportunity classes. — These are classes for retarded overgrown pupils. Many of these children come to our city from rural areas where their education has been irregular.

   • 1969, Alberta. Dept. of Education, Annual Report of the Department of Education, page 78:

     Mildly retarded children, who are usually termed "educable mentally retarded" formed the largest group of handicapped children in Alberta. Most of them attended "Opportunity Classes".
