[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Albanian *api + *ga, *api also giving rise to hap (“step”). Related to hap (“open”).[1] According to Orel, from Proto-Slavic *ob(ъ)pьnъkъ (“sandal, shoe”), comparing Serbo-Croatian opanak,[2] though differences between the Gheg and Tosk forms may suggest otherwise; as per Fortson, a Proto-Albanian origin is supported due to the held view that the two dialects split prior to Slavic contact.[3][4] Compare Romanian opincă.
Noun
[edit]opingë f (plural opinga, definite opinga, definite plural opingat)
- Traditional leather shoes worn by Albanians in Albania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece (by the Arvanites) and the Arbëresh villages of Italy.
