open-field system (plural open-field systems)

1. (agriculture, historical) The prevalent agricultural system in much of Europe during the Middle Ages, in which each manor or village had two or three large fields divided into narrow strips of land individually cultivated by tenants or serfs.

   Synonym: strip farming
