Afrikaans
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Dutch overlijden, from Middle Dutch overliden, from Old Dutch overlīthan; analyzable as oor- (“over-”) + ly (“to suffer”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]oorly (present oorly, present participle oorlydende, past participle oorly)
Usage notes
[edit]- The present participle is barely attestable; sterwende will be used instead.
- Alongside regular het oorly, this verb has an alternative irregular past tense is oorlede:
- Dit is die huis waar hy op die ouderdom van 80 jaar oorlede is. ― “This is the house where he died at the age of 80.”
- The above construction refers to the past and is clearly verbal. Beyond this, oorlede can also be an adjective in a phrase like the following:
- Hy is al lank oorlede. ― “He has long been dead.”
