From Old Norse ǫlbogi, ǫlnbogi, a compound of alin (forearm) and bogi (arc, bow). Compare Danish albue, Faroese albogi, Icelandic olnbogi and Norwegian Bokmål albue. Compare also Swedish armbåge and dialectal Norwegian hainnbåggå.
