[edit]Borrowed from Arabic أُقْنُوم (ʔuqnūm), ultimately from Classical Syriac ܩܢܽܘܡܳܐ (qnōmā, “self, essence, person, hypostasis”). "Infamous person" sense was only popularized by Mochtar Lubis in late 1960, themed around PKI.
