[edit]Backformed as a singular from translingual Octopoda, the order name, derived from New Latin octōpoda, plural of octōpūs (“octopus”), from Ancient Greek ὀκτώπους (oktṓpous), from ὀκτώ (oktṓ, “eight”) + πούς (poús, “foot”).
