From Latin Nuphar, itself from earlier Medieval Latin nenuphar, from Arabic نِلُوفَر (nilūfar), from Middle Persian nylw(k)pl (nīlōpal, lotus, water-lily), from Sanskrit नीलोत्पल (nīlotpala).
