Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

noki (soot) +‎ varis (crow)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈnokiˌʋɑris/, [ˈno̞k̟iˌʋɑ̝ris̠]
  • Rhymes: -ɑris
  • Syllabification(key): no‧ki‧va‧ris

Noun

[edit]

nokivaris

  1. carrion crow (Corvus corone)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Until recently nokivaris (which is rarely seen in Finland) was believed to be just a black variant of hooded crow or grey crow (varis, which is common in Finland). Therefore many dictionaries give "carrion crow" as translation for varis.
