Diminutive of now rare njewjerica +‎ -ka, dissimilated from *wjewjerica, from Proto-Slavic *věverica (squirrel), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (squirrel). Cognate with Upper Sorbian wjewjerčka, Polish wiewiórka, Czech veverka, Serbo-Croatian vjȅverica, and Ukrainian вивірка (vyvirka).
