Etymology

[edit]

ni- +‎ gaṇhāti and ni- +‎ gaṇhati

Although there is a Vedic Sanskrit verb निगृह्णाति (nigṛhṇāti, to hold back), the gemination of the initial of the simplex after prefixes, as in the aorist aggahi, indicates an intermediate stage with the full grade of the root rather than the zero grade.
