Etymology
[edit]From nūoŗ (“young”) + kū (“moon”). The usage of the adjective nūoŗ – perhaps by contamination with Latvian jauns, as Latvian lacks separate terms for "new" and "young." Compare Finnish uusikuu (“new moon”).
