Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic неоукъ (neukŭ), from Proto-Slavic *neukъ (untaught), from *učiti (to teach). Compare Bulgarian неук (neuk), Macedonian неук (neuk, ignorant), Serbo-Croatian neuk (ignorant), Serbo-Croatian nieuk (dunce).
