[edit]From Proto-Tai *laːjᴬ (“saliva”).[1] The irregular initial, which points to *ml-, is possibly due to rebracketing the -m from Proto-Tai *C̬.namꟲ (“water”);[2] compare Thai น้ำลาย (náam-laai, “saliva”), Lao ນ້ໍາລາຍ (nam lāi), Bouyei ramxnaaiz.
In Northern Tai, cognate with Bouyei naaiz.
In Zuojiang Zhuang, cognate with laiz (“saliva”) (Longzhou and Daxin dialects).[3]
