From Ottoman Turkish متصرف (mutasarrıf, governor of a sanjak) (modern Turkish mutasarrıf), from Arabic مُتَصَرِّف (mutaṣarrif, autonomous one, governor of a province), from تَصَرَّفَ (taṣarrafa, to act, to act independently).
