Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *mustikka. Equivalent to musta (black) +‎ -ikka (diminutive suffix).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈmustikːɑ/, [ˈmus̠tikːɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -ustikːɑ
  • Hyphenation(key): mus‧tik‧ka

Noun

[edit]

mustikka

  1. bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus; a common shrub in Finland, and its fruit
  2. bilberry or blueberry, several closely related species of Vaccinium family, none of which grows naturally in Finland

Usage notes

[edit]

The shrub and its berry growing commonly in Finland, Vaccinium myrtillus, are called bilberry in standard English. There are also a number of regional words. Despite this, mustikka is often (mistakenly) translated into English as "blueberry", partly because the species is called blåbär (literally blueberry) in Swedish and Blaubeere (literally blueberry) in German. To add to the confusion, blueberries, which are closely related to bilberries, are also called mustikka in Finnish, and yet other species of Vaccinium family are also referred to as "bilberries" in English.
