Borrowed from Arabic مُهَاجِر (muhājir, literally emigrant). Sense 2 is from its Urdu derivative مُہَاجِر (muhājir).

  1. (Islam) A person who accompanied Muhammad during his migration from Mecca to Medina in 622.

  2. A person who migrated to Pakistan after the Partition of India in August 1947, or one of the descendants.
