[edit]Likely from Medieval Latin muffula (817, Carolingian), a Germanic borrowing from Frankish *molfell (“soft garment made of hide”), from *mol (“softened, forworn”) + *fell (“hide, skin”), from Proto-Germanic *mildijaz (“tender, soft”) + *fellą (“skin, film, fleece”). Compare modern Dutch moffel.
