Etymology

[edit]

Likely from Medieval Latin muffula (817, Carolingian), a Germanic borrowing from Frankish *molfell (soft garment made of hide), from *mol (softened, forworn) + *fell (hide, skin), from Proto-Germanic *mildijaz (tender, soft) + *fellą (skin, film, fleece). Compare modern Dutch moffel.
