Etymology

[edit]

Of unknown origin. Hypothesized to be part of a Nuragic substrate. Often compared with Basque mokor (trunk; lump of earth), but the semantics is dubious. Notice, however, that words having similar shapes are also found in the Balkans; compare Romanian măgură (hill), Albanian magulë (heap).
